Meet Kate Kidson: A Coastal Explorer and Ocean Enthusiast
-
Hailing from Kamloops BC, a city situated 365 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, Kate's venture into the world of fishing was an unexpected turn in her life's narrative. It wasn't until 2011, upon her relocation to Vancouver Island, that she discovered the vibrant fishing community and embraced the thrill of ocean fishing. A Registered Nurse by profession, Kate sought an outlet that would offer her competition, connection, and, above all, an unforgettable good time. In 2012, she embarked on her fishing journey with a 15.5’ Hourston Glascraft, and since then, she has been captivated—both metaphorically and literally.

For Kate, fishing goes beyond mere recreation; it's a way to stay anchored in the present moment. The rush of adrenaline when her line pops off the downrigger ignites a passion in her soul every time. Beyond being a personal pursuit, fishing, for Kate, is a community builder, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds, fostering engaging conversations, and encouraging everyone to embrace the present—a lifestyle she wholeheartedly embraces.

Salmon occupies a special place in Kate's heart, with Coho standing out as her undeniable favourite. The energy and acrobatics of these fish create an epic and exhilarating experience. For Kate, it's not just about landing the biggest catch; it's about leveraging her skill set, patience, and stamina to make the most of every fishing opportunity. Tight lines aren't merely a wish but a mantra she lives by.
-
Vancouver Island, British Columbia, serves as Kate's playground, where she delights in exploring its diverse fishing grounds. While her cherished spots include East Sooke, Nootka Sound, and Barkley Sound, Kate harbours aspirations of uncovering hidden gems like Quatsino Sound and Haida Gwaii.
-
Since 2012, Kate has been a steadfast advocate of Gibbs tackle because, frankly, they deliver results. Having experimented with various imitations, Kate consistently found herself dissatisfied. Her go-to Gibbs spoons include No Bananas, Green Herring Aid, and Bon Chovy, but she's not one to shy away from trying a White or Pink hootchie. When it comes to flashers, Kate swears by the Herring Aid, Betsy, Purple Haze, and Blue Mirror.
